The lack of cement and its high cost were affecting the mining and construction industries to a great extent and so there was a demand for a cement plant in the Zambia. It is then that Zambezi Portland Cement Limited(ZPCL) was established. It started its operation in 2009 in the month of October breaking the long standing monopoly in cement manufacturing sector in Zambia. In fact the established 40 million US dollars worth cement plant brought a high competition to the monopoly in cement manufacturing industry. It’s now the third cement plant in Zambia with the other two being Lafarge and Oriental Quarries.
The quality of cement Portland Cement Zambia produces is ideal for building assignments and constructions, ranging from houses to structural works. The company’s production is in conformity of international and local standards of EN-197 and EN-196. Presently, Dr. Rajan Mahtani owns the company. There was a Supreme Court verdict regarding the ownership of ZPC a few months before where the Supreme Court recognized Finsbury’s interest in Portland Cement Zambia.
Presently, Zambezi Portland Cement increased its monthly cement production to 39,000 tonnes from 36,000 tonnes for serving the demand of the local market. 3000 tonnes extra cement are manufactured nowadays by ZPC. But despite this measure, the demand of the local market for cement remained high and that caused ZPCL to reduce its export of cement by ten percent per month.
Most of the cement manufactured in Portland Cement Zambia is being used for Kalumbila Mine project in Solwezi and that’s the reason others are facing crisis. No matter what, ZPC till now had not made any adjustments to the wholesale price of cement. The market price of 50kg cement bag is K55 whereas when the commodity is sold in huge quantity, it is K1, 100 per tonne.
The cement manufacturing firm is operating consistently and ensures high productivity. Presently, it is producing 1400 tonnes cement each day in Ndola at its manufacturing plant.
